Are long leather coats actually popular in women's fashion again?

I pose the question:  are long leather coats actually popular in women's fashion again?  Personally, I would answer no they are not - at least not in the way that they were when I was a young man in the 1990s.  Since going out of fashion sometime after 2008 it has been a rare treat to see an attractive woman wearing a leather coat in public.  My wife has been a beautiful exception to this trend over the past decade, flourishing a black leather maxi coat mostly at my request when we go out on dates in cold weather.  However, I can honestly say that she is the only woman I have seen buttoned up in a classic long leather coat since 2017!  If we believe what the fashion experts tell us the long leather trench coat has been the "must have" piece of outerwear since 2019.  Unfortunately, I have not witnessed this as commonplace reality.  I realize that I spend long hours cooped up in an office, so I don't see the city sidewalks anymore like I did years ago.  Maybe there are women strutting their stuff in leather coats again that I do not have the opportunity to behold.  With the way COVID has shifted office jobs to working from home, though, I doubt it.  Sidewalks probably do not bustle with the mass of business people they once did.  Likewise, shopping malls are going extinct.  So not only are stores like Macy's, JCPenney, and Wilsons Leather no longer there in brick and mortar to walk into and buy a leather coat, but the women who once shopped in these places wearing leather coats are not there as well.

Is my perception of this wrong?  Are women like my wife as rare as I think?  Is the lady in the leather coat so exclusive that she is only seen among the fashion elite now?

  1. I will very respectfully disagree with you there, I have seen loads of ladies and girls wearing long leather coats and leather jackets, in London, Birmingham, Manchester, and Cardiff in Wales, I recently seen a girl about 24 or 15 wearing a full length brown leather coat as well as many others, in London I did a little experiment, how many leather coats I will see in one day, I saw 128 leather coats, this was only in September 2022 I was amazed, as well as that they are everywhere on the Internet and celebs wearing them , I mean my comments with respect, greetings from wales uk

  2. Do not apologize! This is what I'm looking for - other people's experiences. I am aware that I am not in a position to see what is popular in women's fashion since all my time is spent in a small town office or at sports events with my kids. That is awesome that leather coats are popular in England and Wales. I have always thought of leather fashion as more popular in Europe. Are you counting short leather jackets? I am mostly referring to long button-up leather coats. And are you seeing real leather or the faux vegan stuff? New leather coats or "vintage" ones?
    Thank you for sharing!

  3. Hi I am seeing long leather coats, from 1970s, 1990s, 2000,saw in portobello rd i saw a number of ladies and girls in full length leather coats, as well as shorter leather coats, and a lot of vintage leather jackets, I saw a girl about 14 or 15 in portobello, and she was wearing a full length black leather coat from the 1990s, and a young girl bout 12 wearing a three quarter length black leather coat from three 70s, and in Birmingham the young girl I mentioned was in a 1970s style full length brown leather coat with faux fur collar, tbh there also was vegan leather coats around, I personally don't mind, bc they look so realistic, but yes definitely getting more and more popular,, on the Internet like Facebook, twitter, Instagram, and tik tok, they are everywhere, I mean can u believe, that a young girl only 11or 12, was wearing a full length 1970s black leather coat, handed down by her grandmother, so yes absolutely getting more popular, and one last point seeing more and more on the TV as well, greetings from wales uk, I will comment again bout what I see

  5. Hi there, Jenny from the USA here
I must say that i have never seen as many leather coats out as i'm seeing now, and i'm old enough to have been out in the 80's and 90's.... what i'm really loving is the fact that it has become a must have, so the age group goes from one end to the other. I've seen 14-15yr olds with ankle lengths and ladies 65-70 almost head to toe. It also helps if its a big city like NYC ( where i'm at) and the weather is cold.
It's been perfect to wear out and i don't see any signs of it stopping.
Good luck and good pic hunting from NYC!

  6. Well, it's just disappointing that leather clothes from many brands are of subpar quality nowadays.
Danier still exists, and I bought its leather jumpsuit for my goddess. We had to wait for it to arrive from Canada, and the quality just wasn't there. It had a matte finish and felt like cardboard paper! Not the buttery, squeaky leather. Had to return it.
Then I got her an Emporio Armani leather dress too. Looked great on the website, but the real product was terrible. It was made in India, and the smell was terrible. Smelled like a chemical factory and it wasn't buttery either; so we returned it again.
Later I got her an Alexander McQueen leather blazer, which was nice. Rather thick, buttery and squeaky too!
Got her a few pieces from Frame too. We were lucky enough to get a very squeaky lamb leather blouse and lamb leather jumpsuit from it. We also got the iconic Frame black leather trench. But the trench wasn't too squeaky, it makes a low rustling noise but not dramatic. It looks buttery but it doesn't feel like cold butter or chocolate. Still, we are keeping the Frame trench.

  7. My wife and I recently went into London and I was hoping she would wear the gorgeous Hugo Boss Green leather trench coat I bought her in the Spring for the first time. It was very mild October day and she was somewhat reluctant to wear it as she does not like to stand out which she thinks she does if she is wearing one, never mind the weather. So I said not too worry 'it'll soon be leather coat weather' :) Anyway we got up to the Kings Road and in the next few hours I observed, much to my delight, about 5 girls/women in the 18-25 age range wearing long black leather trench coats which I pointed out to my wife and she acknowledged as a sign that long leather coats are clearly becoming fashionable on the high street. The question I asked myself was are these girls with lots of money or is the pricing becoming affordable for the normal shopper. After a bit of googling I found what I think was the coat in question and as you can see it is at a price that is very affordable: https://www.debenhams.com/product/principles-leather-double-breasted-belted-trench-coat_pdd08077?colour=black&size=14&platform=tp&awc=22735_1667902262_fcc653a8df71962d59e61a63fe1e2db5&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_source=awin&utm_campaign=UK_259955&utm_content=Comparison+Shopping+Service+%28CSS%29
I live in hope the age of the long leather coat is really back!

  8. We rerally musn't be too despondent. Haven't time to write a lot now but here are two German young ladies. They are walking around Soho London UK in long leather coats. They look abbsolutely fabulous and so sexy in their ankle length maxi coats in the traditional black. The event was in July 2022 only a few months ago. We must look to further this great video. I will write more later. Here it is https://youtu.be/yrjg4l9cSRA

  9. I'm definitely seeing a lot more long leather coats these days but unfortunately most are of the pleather/vegan variety. Nice to look at but not that thrill that real leather gives me when I see it. There were plenty about on a recent trip to Manchester on a rainy night. However there was one beautiful teen girl in a 90s style full length coat, fully buttoned and belted that made my heart jump.

  10. I had a great time in London on Saturday, but what I also loved was the fab long leather coats I saw, I can't go through them all, but here are a few I saw, on portobello rd I saw a teen girl about 14 or 15, wearing a full length 90s black leather coat, also there I saw a teen girl wbout 16 or 17, wearing s full length 1970s black leather maxi coat, in Camden I came across 2 girls late teens or early 20s wearing full length 1970s leather coats with fur collar one in brown and the other girl in black, as well as this, I saw a girl same age or a little younger wearing a full length 1970s burgundy leather coat also saw another girl in Covent garden, in a burgundy 1970s leather coat, no fur collar, I also saw ladies and girls wearing black, brown, green, cream, long leather coats, short leather coats, and plenty of vintage leather jackets, from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, can you believe that not only ladies are wearing this amazing look, even teen girls are now wearing full length leather coats in 2022, and then on my way back home from Cardiff Central train station, I saw another girl bout late teens early 20s, wearing a full length brown 1970s leather coat, with fur collar, and I discovered she only lives a mile from me in my nearest town, so you don't need to only go to cities to see long leather coats, they are even in towns , I mean absolutely fantastic, as always I mean my comments about the girls and ladies wearing these fab leather coats and jackets, with the greatest respect to them all.

    1. Oh I totally agree with you in relation to the long leather coat making a comeback in London. It is awesome to see so many on young ladies wearing long black leather coats that flap behind them or are pulled up snug to feel the sensation of being encased in so much beautiful leather. Sadly, I see too many faux leather or vegan leather coats which do not have the style and patina of the really good nineties leather coats that real leather brings. The faux leather can be ridiculously expensive compared to the real thing. SO LONG LIVE REAL LEATHJER.

It is great to see you also got a compliment. I am so pleased men like you and my husband are wearing long leather coats again. I am obviously biased, but my man looks awesome in his ankle length long black leather coat. I wonder if you have seen us in the Camden area where we live. Only this weekend we were both dressed head to toe in leather heading to our favourite leather haunt in Soho. We usually take a taxi but decided to be more daring and use the tube (subway if American). My husband had on his usual leather shirt and jeans and boots. Layered with his long black leather ankle length maxi coat and leather gloves. You've guessed it...he looked gorgeous. I was wearing a black leather zippered cat suit, leather gloves, stylish metal tipped heel and toe thigh boots. Over which I wore my ankle length black maxi coat with matching gloves and large leather handbag. This is where the fun starts.

Inside the bag were our two leather matching gimp masks. You know the sort worn by Kim Kardashian at the New York Met Gala September 2021. As we were walking to the tube station near our home my husband suggested I should put my gimp mask on as we travelled to Soho. He was half-joking but I was up for the dare. He did not think I would do it. I took the gimp mask out of my bag. I pulled it over my head. He tied the back really tight.

At first it was disconcerting to think I was going to wear this in full public view. Then it became exhilarating. I just loved it. The tightness of the hood, the smell of the leather, collar pulled up gave me such a sensation I will never forget. I felt in control. With the hood tied tight I pulled the zipper over my mouth with only the eye zippers open. This was going to be my evening. Swathed in our leather we made our way to the tube station. People began to look but i did not care. Anonymity and power were mine.

Being anonymous gave me so much power and control, self-assertion was mine. I travelled on the underground to Soho being the centre of attention. I adored it and no one knew who I was. The power of black leather and the long black leather maxi coat, when worn with a matching black leather is invigorating. I salute Kim Kardashian for her fashion inspiration.

    2. Did the leather squeak? The leathery squeak is one of the most precious treasures!

The leather garments for my goddess are over $15k. But I don't have any leather clothing for myself. I always dress in T Shirts and track pants beside her, so I would look like her humble servant. In fact, many people don't even believe I am with her. I look up to my cruel, pale goddess, and I never regret. Her cold voice, her leather creaking, and her cold face... We are the Gen Z couple that value femininity and leather power!

  13. Sounds like an amazing experience, and both of you with respect looking amazing in your full length leather coats, I didn't see you this time, as I stopped in Camden and didn't go into Soho, to be honest the majority of leather coats I saw were definitely real leather, especially of the vintage look, from the 1970s 80s 90s and 00s, also there was leather coats from now too, I do agree there os vegan leather around, but in my honest humble opinion, it does look realistic and it is great anyway yo see long leather coats get more and more popular, a very welcome relief from them puffas and parkas, which u personally can't stand the sight of, no disrespect to anyone, I'll keep a look out next time I am in London, hopefully a fortnight time, greetings from wales uk, and many thanks also to the author of leather coat daydreams.

  14. I write from Paris where I am on an overnight business trip. Even in the limited time I have been able to be outside, it is quite evident that the long black leather trench is in vogue here. What a joy to see full length leather coats being worn by young and older ladies alike. My wife and I will be London this weekend and if I am lucky, my wife will be adorning her long black leather trench coat as well!

  15. Recently the war in Europe made me nervous, what happens if we cannot get European leather coats for my goddess?
So I just purchased the double breasted coat from Magda Butrym in Poland, and a double breasted Swedish Flippa K coat. Both are ankle length models! Call me crazy, but it's better to be safe than sorry. It's like more than $6000 but it's worth every dime.
We are expecting the to receive the coats by mid December!

We received the double breasted coat from the Romanian brand, Manokhi. The coat is styled like the one from Magda Butrym, but the quality is only mid-tier. Not flimsy but not breathtaking either, so we will have to return that coat. It's also slightly above the ankle, which doesn't excite us enough.

  16. Vogue recently posted an ad from Maserati, which featured an actress in Milan in long leather coats. Really fits my aesthetic when seeing a rich and privileged lady in a leather coat.

  17. No. Currently leather-related clothing accessories for women trending are... biker jackets... Which to be honest are ugly and strange. I'd prefer they go back to 90s and wear what was popular back then - leather blazers, classical leather jackets (without weird crap all around and faux shit) and coats.

  18. I respectfully disagree with anonymous comment on 12 January,I've recently been to London last year and this year, and I've seen loads of ladies and girls wearing long leather coats and jackets, just a fortnight ago, came across lots of ladies and girls wearing leather coats, a girl about 16 or 17 wearing a full length black leather coat, another girl in a full length leather coat, a young teen girl in a 3 quarter length leather coat, and a lady in a stunning full length leather coat are just some of the ones that have stuck in my mind, but there really are loads, plus there are loads on the Internet and celebs wearing long leather coats, yes there are also vegan leather, but to be honest they look like the real thing, and are a no disrespect to anyone welcome relief from them horrific puffas and parkas, I mean all my comments with respect
