A homage to all the ladies from the 1970s to the first decade of the new millennium who were sophisticated enough to button up a long leather coat over an elegant outfit and strut their stuff. Sleek leather coats disappeared from mainstream fashion for a while, but their popularity may be on the rise once more. This page is dedicated to those who hope that such classic style finds its way back into women's wardrobes again someday.

This is what we love about leather. The journey from the carcass to the beauty of the long leather coat. It is not a journey many vegans will enjoy but it is the journey into beauty. What we see is the beauty bequeathed to us by the slaughtered cow. It will have been skinned and gone through the tanning etc. Just that small description is enough to deter the vegan but for those who love leather it is a poetic journey. For we leather lovers appreciate the sacrifice the cow has made for us. We know that the leather coat is a special offering. We know that the cow is being given a greater life. We will wear it with pride. The sheets of leather sown together prove the beautiful long black leather coat as worn above. There is nothing more beautiful than seeing the leather from the back. The garment flows in all it’s beauty and flaps loudly as the wearer walks forward. We find the look and sound intoxicating. It is that the cow as acquired a second life. A second existence. As admirers of the long leather coat we are happy to enjoy such an experience as it stimulates our senses and it is one of the most beautiful things for a woman’s wardrobe. Sadly vegans will disagree but we know we are right. The long black leather coat is our right.
ReplyDeleteI like much of what you write in relation to leather. You describe the journey of leather from the carcass to the final product of the leather coat very beautifully. We should see the journey as a celebration of the life of which ever beast has given it’s life for our benefit. The one thing I strongly disagree with is your assessments of vegans in relation to this journey. I actually follow a very strict vegan diet but I celebrate the beauty of leather. Leather is one of the most sustainable green materials available. One could use this to criticise the petroleum based use of vegan/faux leather. I will not bother.other than to note it is just not like real leather in terms of smell, look, feel, sounds, wearability or patina. Only real leather can provide those factors not faux PUC leather. It is just a travesty to compare vegan leather to real leather. So why do I as a vegan real wear real leather. Is it a contradiction? Is it hypocrisy? My answer to both these is a resounding NO! How do I rationalise this apparent cognitive dissonance. Simply by pointing out that with people eating so much meat there is so much leather to be made from the slaughter of such animals. As stated earlier leather is a very sustainable material. It can last decades and can be passed on as a heirloom piece in many cases. Purchasing a long leather coat is a statement of intent. to style and sophistication. The more you wear it the cost per wear is very financially rewarding. Along with that is the knowledge that each wear will add to the patina of the coat. Each movement, each crack, each creak, each brush against another item will leave their crease or mark that individualises the coat for the wearer..What more can one say. As a vegan I wear as much leather as possible. I do not see it as dead skin but a living essence that should be celebrated. I love sustainable fashion and clothing. Leather is that fabric. I celebrate leather everyday. I wear it everyday. It is a passion of mine. Some have tried to call it a fetish. A fetish would indicate one is being secretive about wearing leather. On the contrary I am very public about wearing leather. Leather is a powerful statement it embodies, embraces, empowers and emboldens who I am. It makes me feel comfortable and confident in who I am. I do not feel embarrassed by claiming my love and passion for leather. I am proud of it. The several ankle length leather coats I wear are a statement to that effect. There is nothing sleazy of fetishistic about wearing leather as a proud public statement of one’s passion for leather. I am comfortable in animal skins. The more of them the better. 85% of my wardrobe is leather. Long May it remain so. I leave the fetishisation and sleazy propaganda of leather to those who seek to present leather in such fashion. That is their concern. Mine is to wear leather as often as possible and layered as often as possible. Celebrate a love of leather. Wear as much leather as you can. I do. I love the power, admiration and looks I get as I wear my long leather coats. Celebrate life. Celebrate leather.
